Movement for the Mind

A workshop created specifically for Black-identified folks to create community, engage in healing movement and discuss the stigmas of mental health within our community. We are creating this healing space to discuss, share & decompress about the mental health needs of our community and ways we can begin supporting it.

Due to a stigmas surrounding mental health for Black folks - we felt it was important to create an experiential workshop, drawing on the healing power of movement and the interrelationship to the body and mind.

We will discuss how dance & movement can support trauma-related issues like social isolation, depression, anxiety and grief. In addition engage in a gentle yoga practice and finish with a movement through dance portion.

What to wear:

Dress comfortably

Bring a yoga mat if you own one

EVERYBODY is a fitness + wellness space in NE LA / Cypress Park, devoted to providing a safe and supportive environment for all bodies to move, strengthen, and heal. We believe that health and wellness should be accessible, affordable and adaptive to all people regardless of their gender, race, age, size, or ability.

QUEER CARE LA will take place in the outdoor courtyard space at EVERYBODY. It is partially covered and set back from the street.

Single stall, gender neutral restrooms are located inside the gym.

Please come **free of scents** (colognes, perfumes, oils, body products, laundry detergent, etc.) If you have questions about this, post here or feel free to directly email one of our organizers, Jonah at jonahalinedaniel at gmail dot com. We are also working with the vendors to make sure that essential oil products aren't detrimental to anyone's health.

Getting there/parking: there are several bus lines that can get you to the location: the 90, 91, 94 and 794 lines on San Fernando Road, and the 28 on Cypress Road (directly behind the location.) There is also a parking lot on the premises and another large lot right across the street at the Rio State Park.

If anyone needs some quiet time during the event, there is a park directly across the street with a lot of green and peaceful walking paths.

The organizers of Queer Care have also composed a Statement of Purpose, here below. We hope this helps you all get to know us a little better!

We are a group of queer radical herbalists + healers organizing intentionally as a multi-racial collective with diverse class, religious, and ability backgrounds. We are committed to healing justice, radical mental health, and class accessibility.

We aim to create and support community for queer herbal practitioners and folks seeking herbal healing, via educational events, skillshares, and workshops that center herbalists of color and resist cultural appropriation.

Because of the ways in which capitalism and government regulation control and commodify sacred and community-based herbal traditions, we seek to contribute to an alternative model of access to herbal medicine.

We are:
Guadalupe Rocio Chavez / Agua Dulce Healing
Elokin Orton-Cheung / Shooting Star Botanicals
Jonah Aline Daniel / Plants as Allies / Narrow Bridge Candles

About the instructors:

Leanne Pedante is a certified Group Fitness Instructor and lover of boxing, running, and lifting heavy things. She grew up on the east coast and lived a past life as a cigarette-smoking, booze-drinking, graphic designer before moving to California and changing things up. Although her relationship with exercise was not always a healthy one, movement now serves her as a tool for mental and physical health, and happiness. Leanne's goal is to help others turn exercise into a tool that truly serves them.

Megan Flowers.jpg

Megan Flowers is an ISSA certified personal and group trainer. She is also certified through the Pilates Method Alliance as a Pilates mat and Reformer instructor and as well as a certified SPINNING instructor.

I believe in the progress and not perfection philosophy. We are given this one body, this one home and it is up to us to treat it how we decide. It about creating the body that you will be your infinite body, wherever you may be at that time in your life. Its not always possible to be in our tip top shape or give the best performance. This is about being the best you that you are today.
