EVERYBODY officially came to life after Sam Rypinski and Lake Sharp met in a feminist business class at the Women’s Center for Creative Work in the fall of 2015 and realized they shared more than just a non-traditional approach to business based on feminist principles. They both had already created their own successful businesses. Sam had been developing the business model for EVERYBODY for several months and Lake had a background in the fitness industry and a passion for a holistic approach to health. When they bonded over both being end of life caretakers to parents with mental illness, the ground was officially laid for what was to become EVERYBODY, a project born of a genuine desire to create safe space for all bodies to strengthen and heal.
Q: What is EVERYBODY's approach to bathrooms and locker rooms?
A: We respect (and celebrate!) the fact that people do not always neatly conform to a binary system of gender. We thought long and hard about the best way to approach this issue and decided that ultimately, not forcing anyone to have to make a choice is the best way to honor all members of our diverse population. We are creating a locker room and bathroom that allows all our members to change, shower, and use the bathroom facilities in complete privacy. We will have one main locker room and one bathroom, but individual bathroom stalls and changing rooms will be available to ensure that everyone has privacy who wants it.
Q: But what if I don't mind changing in front of other people?
A: You still can. We just ask that all members be mindful of the diverse community we serve and respectful of each other at all times. Any and all inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances. In order to create a space where people can feel safe and secure to pursue their health and wellness goals, we ask that all members follow our explicit policies against sexual harassment, indecent exposure, body shaming, transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism and misogyny.
Q: How are you going to ensure that people of color specifically feel not only welcome in but organically a part of this space?
A: We are committed to inclusive programming and practices that ensure that EVERYBODY lives up to its name by serving a population that is diverse not only in terms of gender identification and expression, but that reflects the rich and vibrant racial and cultural diversity of Los Angeles. It is very important to us to offer fitness and wellness programming that is created and led specifically by and for people of color. We are in the process of hiring a racially diverse staff as well as putting into place a Board of Directors who will help inform and align our practices with the best interests of all members of our community.
Q: What exactly makes you a "family friendly" gym?
A: We believe that exercise is important for every phase of life, and we are excited to offer several group fitness classes and workshops that are geared towards parents, children and seniors. As we grow, we plan to offer childcare as well as workshops geared towards things such as queer family planning and safe and natural childbirth. We are in talks with doulas and midwives about hosting workshops that address the particular needs of pre and postpartum parents. We also not only value but avidly support intergenerational community and are developing programming specifically geared to meet the unique needs of our senior members.
Q: Is EVERYBODY really just a gym?
A: While we offer a lot of the same services as a traditional gym such as weight-lifting equipment, personal training, and fitness classes, we are really expanding the concept of "gym" to include a much broader and holistic approach to health and wellness.
Q: Is "wellness" and "personal training" included in my membership?
A: While we offer many different kinds of membership that include classes and use of the gym floor, all wellness and personal training services are available a la carte and can be booked directly through the practitioner or trainer.
